German sleeveless chemise- Finished!I made myself a thing! I've been slowly but steadily plugging away at the Cranach gown. All the pieces for the dress have been cut out, the under-petticoat just needs a hem, and the sleeveless chemise is done!

Pictures aren't very fabulous, due to a lack of good lighting and being taken on my iphone, but at least there's proof that the chemise exists. It's a thing! That works! I haven't finished my Goldhaube yet (the headdress/cap), so for these photos I just wound some extra lengths of linen around my head to hide my incredibly modern bleached hair with several inches of roots.

So far I'm sort of loving this style of garment as a support layer. I wore it all afternoon in my apartment, and found it to be super comfy as well as supportive. I don't know how well it would work for those more heavily endowed than myself, but for this particular C-cup lady nothing slipped or jiggled and everything is held securely in place.

I ended up using some black wool tape at the front neckline instead of the velvet ribbon I mentioned in my last post. Upon reflection it seemed like a choice that was far more practical than velvet, especially if I want to use this chemise with more middle-class 15th century impressions as well (which I do). I'm curious to try this style chemise with a fairly wide variety of German fashions from the 15th and 16th centuries. It seems to have been in use across a wide span of time even as styles of dress changed around it, so I'll be interested to find what sort of dress style it works best with on a body. Perhaps all of them. We'll see.

So
I never got around to making my early German Renaissance dress last
summer (I did make costumes for the niblings though!) and instead have
now found myself coming back to the dress lo these six months later.
Today was a surprise day off work, so I spent it working on the
foundation layer.

There seems to be no firm consensus
as to what exactly was worn beneath 'Cranach' dresses of the early 16th
century, but there is a particular style of undergarment which I've seen
in a bunch of images both before and after this time period which makes
lots of sense as a base layer. It's basically a sleeveless sort of
chemise; tight enough in the torso to support the bust and provide the
smooth white layer seen under the open front lacing of the dress itself,
as well as having full skirts attached at the waist (which I imagine
would also help keep the front waistline of the dress' skirt up where it
should be in spite of the wide front opening... I'll guess I'll find
out later if that's true or not!)

I've seen other
bloggers/costumers refer to this type of undergarment as a bra-dress
(based off the Lengberg Bra I believe), or a bra-shirt, or some other
bra variation. Which again, these garments all have attached skirts, so I
can't really get behind calling it some sort of bra, and am just going
to stick with 'Sleeveless Chemise' for now. Probably not at all what it
was called back in the day, but no-one in Saxony around 1515 ever said
"I'm going to have a new Cranach dress made" either, so we'll all just
be inaccurate together forever. Amen.
the earlier 14th and 15th century versions of this garment which seems
to have mostly existed in areas of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It
must have been highly practical and comfortable as you see it clear on
through into the later half of the 16th century!

These
two images are roughly100 years apart, and both depict nearly the exact
same undergarment, which I am now it the process of making. As someone
who gets twitchy about how chemise sleeves sit and layer on the body, I
am super exited to be trying out this blessedly sleeveless chemise!

I'm
using a white handkerchief weight linen for this project, with two
layers in the main bodice, and one layer for the 'breast bag'/bust
section, and one layer in the skirts. It will close with lacing on the
sides of the bodice, and I'm using velvet ribbon for the black band at
the front neckline. I imagine that velvet or a wool band along the top
would help grip onto the dress itself and stop the Brustfleck from
slipping or moving around. Again, total conjecture on my part at the
moment... we'll see how it works out.
can see here on my pattern how the shoulder straps curve out away from
the body on the front piece. This is so the straps won't show beneath
the nearly off-the-shoulder look of the dress itself.
I
hemmed the top of the bust piece before gathering it and stitching it
into the bodice. I'll gather up the bust/front neckline once it's on my
body for a final fitting. I tried at on the other day as best as I could
with no eyelets for lacing yet, and it looks like it'll be a good fit,
so fingers crossed!Gwendolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12515958095667834227noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6726079715627037503.post-74222754842831698472016-08-19T00:10:00.000-04:002016-08-19T00:11:25.001-04:00Planning a German Renaissance Gown (in the style of the Saxon Court)With the vague deadline of 'sometime in mid-late September', I have four different outfits to make for a trip to the ren faire with my sister, four-year-old niece, and two-year-old nephew. My sister and nephew will be dressed as Vikings, my niece is getting a fabulous pink/lavender/maroon dress made with a number of theatrical sacrifices to accommodate a wildly active and dirt loving princess, and I am making myself a German frock from the beginning of the 16th century.

After putting together a pinterest board containing research images that I liked, I realized I kept being drawn to styles from Saxony during the period roughly spanning 1510-1535. While this style of dress is often referred to across the internet as a Cranach dress (due to an artist of the time called Lucas Cranach who painted about a million paintings of people wearing this type of frock) I prefer to avoid that particular terminology. After all, someone in Saxony in 1520 wouldn't say, 'Oh, I'm having a new Cranach dress made', they'd just say 'I'm getting a new dress, bitches!' Or something along those lines.

Anyway, here's my rough sketch of what I want my own dress to be.

Because I'm going to be wearing this dress at Ren Faire, I want to keep things as cool and comfortable as possible. America is so stupidly hot, you guys! I'd somehow forgotten what sun + humidity feels like and I am NOT a fan. This means that even though a lot of the original gowns in paintings look to be velvet or wool, I'm simply not doing that. The main fabric of my dress will be linen with a silk petticoat underneath. My linen arrived in the post yesterday and I promptly washed and ironed it, so things are ready to go! I've already started on the golden cap, or Goldhaube, worn under the be-feathered hat and will do a write-up on my cap and that process quite soon.

Colors for this type of Saxon dress seemed to fall within a fairly restricted spectrum, with dark green, dark red, and black all contrasted by golden brocade bands being the most common. You do see occasional dresses made entirely of brocade, or another color such as a royal-ish blue, pink, or rust, but those are decidedly less common. In a move that probably surprises no one, I went with black.

Below are the reference images which have most heavily shaped my choices for this dress and which I found the most inspiring. Unless the internet is lying to me, they are all by Lucas Cranach the Elder.
Plus a bonus costume tragedySo this past year has been one of constant change and constant travel and I'm only just now starting to be able to sit back, take stock, and settle into myself a bit.

It's now been... oh... over three years since I've done any sewing or costuming for myself, which kind of pushed this blog into a semi-death. Getting my masters while dealing with severe depression REALLY didn't help, and after that I was expending all my energy on freelancing. In fact, until this past month, (in which I found a stable job within theatre and actually signed a year-long lease on an apartment) I'd been essentially living out of suitcases going from job to job since last November. Not conducive to maintaining any sort of hobby.

However, I'm now recently back in the States (my almost 70-year-old dad had a very serious health scare which made me super anxious about being so far away from family) living in the greater Chicago area, am some-what stable, and am actually finding myself picking up sewing again in my spare time! I think it helps that I'm now working as a Draper, and have found that doing patterning/fitting all day results in far far FAR less burnout than sewing all day did. I've always far enjoyed the research/patterning/fitting side of costuming over actually cutting and stitching a garment, so getting Draper jobs this past year has been a very welcome change.

And now that I'm in a better physical and mental space to pick up personal costuming again, I have loads of plans and am starting to form a line-up of projects.

I desperately need to sew EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW though as I have several events I want to go to and I have nothing to wear. Literally. I literally have nothing anymore due to a tragic mould incident when my stuff was all in storage and international transit. Everything from my MFA degree was hopelessly ruined, as was the vast majority of my personal costumes.

I now have left to my name:
a hoopskirt
two 18th century petticoats which are too small in the waist anyway because I'm now 30 years old and my body went 'haha screw you!' and went up two-three sizes in the past year
my old cotton print 1860s dress which I no longer fit into
my two steampunk outfits from 2012 which I no longer fit into either
my 1912 dress which (surprise surprise) is also definitely too small

That is it. That is all I have. Basically, I have an 1860s crinoline which I can use, so

As you can see, I'm gonna need to make a lot if I want to go anywhere to do anything.

The first projects in this new chapter of my life are already underway, and I will be blogging about them next... expect some early 16th century German fun, a small sparkly 'princess', and an even smaller and totally adorable Viking. That's right, I'm going to take my little niece and nephew to their very first ren faire early this fall! Fabrics are ordered and sewing has commenced... should be super fun :)Gwendolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12515958095667834227noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6726079715627037503.post-29306031144927326132015-07-24T18:01:00.000-04:002015-07-24T18:01:43.707-04:00What's in a name?Sometimes it seems like the hardest part of setting up an account, online shop, real-life business, getting a pet, writing a book/blog post/essay, or basically doing anything in life that requires a name or title is coming up with a name or title. There's a worry that people won't get it, or that you won't like it in a few years, or that it won't always be a proper fit.

My blog(s) and overall online presence have gone through a number of different names in my attempt to find something that worked, but I've never really been completely happy with any of them. Recently, I've been feeling increasingly disconnected from Idlewild Illustre. It didn't really say anything about who I was or what I was about, and was even less connected to the things I hope to accomplish and talk about in the future.

So, dear readers, I axed it.

I've often thought that if I was to ever legally change my surname for some reason, it would be to Grey. In fond imaginings of winning the lottery, there are visions of a fashion house and swanky stores with doormen and 'Gwendolyn Grey' on the front of the buildings. My alter-ego who I embrace when I need to Get Things Done is called Gwendolyn Grey. She's the person I try to be and who I'm constantly working towards becoming.

There's no point in tying yourself to an identity, whether online or not, that no longer represents you. So much about my life is in a massive state of flux right now, and it seems like a very fitting time to make my blog and online identity a better fit. It's a new dawn and a new day and all that!

My url is the same for now, so hopefully bookmarks and blog feeds won't be effected. Just look out for Gwendolyn Grey on your lists instead of Idlewild Illustre!

(aaand with that done and me feeling far more comfortable with my teeny tiny corner of the internet, I can get back to actually posting about costume stuff and sharing the things I've made and learned during the last year or so)

The first thing I did after finishing my masters degree this spring was to drink nearly an entire bottle of prosecco, sleep for about twenty hours, and then dye my hair pastel pink.

Immediately after my final hand-in my mother came to visit for a couple weeks, and I got to show her everything I'd done/made over the past year and a half, plus take her all around Edinburgh indulging in touristy things. We were going to go to the Isle of Skye for a bit, but took an impromptu trip to Madrid (Spain!!! Ahhh!) instead after finding super cheap flights.

If you imagined the majority of our holiday pictures were posed or serene, like this one, you'd be wrong.

We mostly took a lot of terrible selfies, and it was glorious.

Nothing has slowed down at any point though, as I went back to Outlander in June... starting a couple days before my mother left. I've been working there since then as a junior costume maker, working on some really lovely things that I so wish I could show you! I can't wait for you guys to see Season 2!!

So what comes next?

Now that's the tricky question... one which I don't yet have an answer to. I have lots of ideas. Lots of goals, lots of wishes; and very little strength to tackle them. My lease ends soonish at the end of August, and I don't yet know where I'll go or what exactly I'll be doing. Whatever it may become, my life needs to involve a good wifi connection, since I have SO MUCH lined up to blog about! So. Much.

Thank goodness I can blog from my bed, too, as I think I need a bit of a breather before throwing myself into the rest of my life.
Graduation is imminent! There are only three weeks left to do ev er y thing!!

Part of the lead-up to the show was a press call which took place day before yesterday. All graduating costume designers (post and undergrad both) took one costume to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery where they were modeled for invited press. The location was stunning and some really lovely shots of some of the costumes ended up in the papers and there was a nice little segment on STV as well.

I was rather excited to see my fairytale wedding dress for The Girl in the Edinburgh Evening News the next day!

If you're in Scotland at the end of the month you can still get tickets to the catwalk show, which will be April 23-25. The fashion design portion of the show is quite interesting as well, but let's be real. Costume is where it's at. ;) And there will be some seriously amazing work on display... everyone's stuff is so different and exciting!

I took some of my own pictures on my iphone at the press call... I only wish I had had a better camera with me to capture it with!
That said, I very much do NOT recommend going through a bad depressive episode during grad school. That way lies misery, guilt, and sorrow. However, thanks to the wonders of modern medicine, I have been able to pick myself up these past couple months and have made real progress towards my final MFA degree show.

Naturally, however, the catwalk show which occurs before the degree show is only four weeks away and there is still SO MUCH to finish! With depression somewhat subdued, I am no longer spending my days struggling to get out of bed, but instead spending my days convincing myself that I don't need to pick up a million new hobbies and projects immediately...

After May I can sew for myself and pick up tablet weaving and make all the bath bombs and perfumes and incenses that I like (and post some of the many, MANY blog posts I have already planned and sort of drafted). For now I have a design book to finish, and a hussar inspired Queen and an 1820s Devil to make.

Til then, here are a few pictures I snapped behind the scenes at a recent photoshoot (for show promo etc.). I had chosen two costumes in the photoshoot, both of the same main character from my story The Girl Without Hands. My two lovely models, Poppy and Charlotte, are both undergraduates in the Performance Costume programme at ECA. I can't wait to post some of the resulting official photos later... they turned out beautifully!
This time though, it has become a part of my life in a very different way than before. Since the begining of my summer break, I've been working as a Costume Trainee on the Starz production of Outlander which is filming here in Scotland. This is my first experience working on a TV show, and I've learned quite a lot in the last couple months!
(Official production still of the two main characters: Claire and Jaime)

The series premiers on the 9th of August in the US, and if historical drama and fighting and romance is your thing you should definitely give it a watch! Apparently the book series it's based on has quite loyal followers, but not having read the books myself I can't tell you much on that score. ;)

Check out the trailer below and see what you think! Even if I wasn't working on it, it's the sort of show I'd probably be really into.
I figured that the vocabulary differences wouldn't be an issue... after all, half of my extended family lives in the UK, and everyone already knows about basic things like sweater/jumper, truck/lorry, crisps/chips, sidewalk/pavement etc.

What I didn't know was that in the UK they often use different words for various fabrics, notions, or sewing terms than are used in America. So for all the sewists out there looking to hop the pond in either direction, here's what I've run across so far:

Cheesecloth = Muslin
Muslin = Calico
Burlap = Hessian
Mock-up = Toile
Seam-ripper = Unpicker
Stitch Witchery = Bondaweb
To baste something = To tack something
Serger = Overlocker
Snaps = Poppers

If anyone has any more words to add to the list, please let me know! I'd love to have a comprehensive list going!

I'm also trying to get better at working with the metric system... having 1 or 1.5 cm seam allowances have at least begun to seem somewhat natural, though it's a work in progress! My sister-in-law is working at Ickworth House not far from Bury, and as I'm always more than happy to see historic houses (especially neo-classical and/or victorian) we spent an afternoon there.

Ickworth was lovely, but it was one of the few costumes they had up on display which really captured my heart. There was no placard or any information on hand, but it looks like a fairly typical evening gown from about 1900-1905.
It's been absolutely ages since I last made myself something, and I think this dress just shot straight to the top of my list. I want it so badly you have no idea. I took a ton of photos and would have been happy to spend the rest of the day just staring longingly at the gown.
At the moment I have quite a lot of projects 'in progress', and am slowly chipping away at the list of things to get done.

First priority for the rest of the semester is finishing all the final costume illustrations for The Girl Without Hands. I've decided to do them on illustration board, and start with a pencil drawing which then gets set with fixative and varnished so that I can paint on top. I just do a simple wash of acrylic to tone the board, and then use thin layers of oil paint on top.

(this one was sort of at the half-way point here)

I've also started mocking up and making costumes for the main character, and am aiming on having three toiles and at least one finished final costume by the turn in date in May. In spite of not having masses of time at my disposal, I'm still doing quite a bit of hand stitching on the final pieces... such as the shift currently on the stand. After all, there's nothing quite like focusing on hand work for some quality stress relief!

Ridiculous. So I guess I've been kind of MIA online lately, but it turns out that dealing with illness and some personal issues while trying not to fall too far behind on grad school work means that something or another was going to have to fall by the wayside. And that was pretty much most of the internet. (aside from tumblr which for me mostly consists of reblogging fandom or feminist stuff. and cat pictures.) So massive apologies if I haven't responded to emails… if you've messaged me, I haven't forgotten about you! Promise!

That said, I've got a lot stored up to talk about… still tons of images and research from the Germany trip, as well as epic fabric shopping in London, and of course what I've been working on in the studio for the past month or two.

'Til then, I'll leave you with some little sketches from when I was working out ideas for a couple costumes before committing to final illustrations.
is a reprint of a collection of prints from 1825, all of
which show various styles of dress and genre scenes of everyday life across
Bavaria. (naturally, it is also out of print and not easy to find...)

The women pictured in Fig.1 are
wearing gowns that appear to be in line with the fashions throughout Europe at that time. The waistlines are at a fairly
natural height, hems gently brush the top of the feet and carry various styles
of decorative trim, and the sleeves are moderately full. Over top of these gowns, the women wear a stays/corset-like garment called a mieder, which
unlike the more broadly fashionable gowns is a specifically regional item of clothing. Their ensembles are finished off with aprons,
colourful kerchiefs, and a style of embroidered or beaded headdress specific to Munich and Upper
Bavaria.

The styles shown in Fig.2 appear
quite different to those in Fig.1, but though highly regionalized, the
silhouettes still reflect broader fashions of the time. The waistlines are still raised to the height
which had been fashionable about five to eight years prior to this point, and
skirts maintain the volume as those seen in Fig.1. However, Fig.2 is
particularly wonderful as it depicts nearly every item of women’s clothing
typically worn in the Upper Bavarian region during this time period. These garments consisted of
a linen shift worn underneath everything, over the shift came the leibchen which was often armless and
buttoned up the front, next is the mieder as mentioned above, skirt, jacket, kerchief, apron, and the footless stockings
which were also worn by the men of the region.

This last example is also featured on the front cover of the book, and for good reason I think. It's great seeing men's and women's fashions side by side! The book is chock full of a wide variety of wonderful imagery, but I'm rather leery of stepping on too many copyright toes and don't feel comfortable posting everything.

Both images above depict women
selling various food goods in the Munich marketplace during the spring of
1816. There is obviously a great deal of
similarity between the clothing worn in both images, with the greatest
similarity lying in the colours worn.
Blue and white are dominant, with black and red providing contrast. Considering that the national colours of
Bavaria were blue and white, it’s difficult to know if these artistic
representations actually reflect colours that were commonly worn in the streets
of Munich or if the colours served as a visual shorthand to more easily
indicate the setting.

A closer look at Fig.1 shows many
elements of fashion still hanging-over from the 18th century, and
which would have been considered old-fashioned in 1816. The woman depicted is clearly not young,
which might be why she’s not exactly on the cutting edge of fashion. Her black, buckled shoes and blue, clocked
stockings resemble those from the late 18th century, as does the cut
of her jacket with its cuffed, elbow length sleeves. These older styles are coupled with the high
waistline of the time and short, calf-length skirt which, though not in line
with high fashion, was ubiquitous amongst the lower sort and working class
across Germany. Perhaps the most
uniquely regional aspect of her dress is her fur trimmed hat. This style of hat had been worn in the Munich
area since the 18th century; although unlike the shoes and jacket
depicted, its size is indicative of 1816 as the same type of hat worn in the previous century was significantly larger.

The younger woman in Fig.2 is a bit
more up-to-date than her counterpart in Fig.1, yet also wears certain styles of
clothing specific to the Upper Bavarian/Munich area. Her skirt is of approximately the same
length, although a little less full, than that in Fig.1, with an almost
identical apron worn at the raised waistline.
Unlike the shoes in Fig.1, her blue shoes with the low, contrasting white heels
are actually rather fashionable for 1816. (It's possible that these shoes in the national
colours of Bavaria are as much a symbol of national pride as they are of
fashion.) The rest of her dress is in the
regional style, with a sleeveless garment called a Mieder worn over a white shift and finished with a kerchief around
the neck. I'll break down and discuss the individual items of clothing in much greater detail in the future, but the style pictured here is a very
good representation of the time.

Other images from München Im Jahreslauf depict a
wide range of individuals, including an old wood-seller, a sailor, gravedigger,
farmer, bar-maid, and young boy carrying a Christmas tree on his head. With the exception of the sailor, all the figures
are pretty representative of the common people within Munich during the 1810s, and give a
wonderful insight into the everyday life and clothing of the time.
Going to the Steampunk convention, Teslacon III, was one of the biggest highlights of 2012 and even though I had no idea what the following year would hold, I wanted to be involved somehow for Teslacon IV. Long story short, due to moving to Scotland I wasn't able to attend Teslacon this time around in 2013, but I did sew for it!

One of the special elements of Teslacon is the cast who remain in character all weekend and act out a specific storyline. For Teslacon IV, new villianous characters were introduced: factions of werewolves and vampires. My friend Nicole was responsible for designing and creating the costume for the head werewolf, and I for designing and making the costume for the lead vampire.

After a bunch of conversations about the character and doing several sketches, the head of the con decided on the one above (which was luckily my pick as well). I was told the colors should be blood red, and I began sourcing fabrics.

Then I moved abroad and things became rather tricky. It's never easy to do a long-distance sewing project for
another person, and this particular venture was even more stressful
since there was no opportunity for a fitting. I had a set of
measurements to work from and could only make everything as adjustable as possible, cross my fingers, and hope that
everything would work out okay. It also did not help that the largest mannequin that I had access to was several inches smaller than the actress, but I got the costume done and in the post.

And it wasn't a disaster! The bodice ended up being a little bit big in the bust, but for having no fittings whatsoever I consider it a success. I can't stress enough how unideal not having at least one fitting is. I would never ever recommend it!

Not being in attendance at the con, I was really happy to see the pictures of the vampire costume in action. Logically, since I wasn't there, I didn't take any of the photos below! It was great seeing Tabitha as Angelique de LaMorte, accompanied by her faithful minions and various other nefarious sorts.
I've managed to fall behind a bit on my blog posts (I choose to blame end of semester papers and the holidays)... and there's quite a lot to cover even just from my short research trip to Bavaria, which I'm really looking forward to sharing!

This morning, as I was in the shower thinking of All The Things that happened in 2013, it suddenly dawned on me that 2013 had marked my ten year anniversary of costume making. Somehow, during the course of the year, this had totally escaped me. It's kind of crazy to think that I've been doing this costuming thing for over a decade now, and I thought it would be fun to look back at where it all began.

In the spring of 2003, not long after my 17th birthday, I bought myself over eight yards of polyester lining fabric, some sort of silver metallic trim, and a Butterick pattern to make what I refered to in my diary as "a Sharpe era dress". The dress was completely sewn by machine, laced up the back with metal eyelets, was 100% polyester inside and out, and I loved it. I think it's fair to say that this dress, no matter how it appears in retrospect, changed my life in innumerable ways.

Ten years later!

I have learned and changed SO MUCH from 2003-2013, and now that a new year is starting I'm really curious to discover where the next ten years will take me!

It's also been about ten years since I first discovered that there were other costumers online, and started following others and posting my own things. It would be so interesting to see "then and now" pictures of everyone! Not only have we all changed, but the internet and picture taking and knowledge sharing has radically changed as well... hopefully all for the better. :) Gwendolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12515958095667834227noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6726079715627037503.post-8970736582985894182013-11-21T12:06:00.000-05:002013-11-21T12:06:02.797-05:00in the sketchbookSince I'm currrently off Learning And Looking At Things in Germany, I figured that it might be a good time to post some of the sketches I did for various 'Girl Without Hands' characters. Most of these are just my initial impressions/ideas and most likely will not really resemble the final designs/illustrations much at all, but at least it shows a bit of what's been tumbling around in my head. For working out ideas I like to scan pencil drawings into the computer and then mess around with color in photoshop... though I don't think I'll use this sort of technique for the final illustrations.
And tomorrow I get to look at original 19th century pieces of German folk costume... so hopefully I'll soon have a bunch of new research to incorporate!Gwendolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12515958095667834227noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6726079715627037503.post-78671431291205362422013-11-19T19:05:00.000-05:002013-11-19T19:05:33.126-05:00Doll progress progressesWhile I have not yet finished the costume for the doll/tiny mannequin, a great deal of progress has been made. Although incomplete, it is now in the general shape of a dress, with the general idea of fabrics and textures. I didn't get any fabrics especially for this project, and just relied on scraps that I had on hand. In this instance: silk georgette, stretch velvet (backed with cream taffeta to give it stability), and bits of antique lace. A rough approximation of the sleeve is just pinned on, and the whole
dress requires a LOT more beads, not to mention she still needs a headdress as
well.
I won't be able to work on it for at least another week though, as I am leaving tomorrow for a research trip to Germany to study traditional 19th century Bavarian folk costume up close and personal. I'm spending a week in Munich, and am going to several museums/institutions in the vicinity. So exciting! And for those of you who know the city, please let me know if there's anywhere or anything in Munich that I shouldn't miss seeing while I'm there!Gwendolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12515958095667834227noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6726079715627037503.post-82606775062075500212013-11-18T20:24:00.001-05:002013-11-18T20:26:50.879-05:00Doll-sized costumes - trial and error in miniatureIt's often easier for to work out a design and fabric choices in 3D than solely through sketches, and since I wanted to play around more with the 'wedding scene dress' from my last post without spending a bunch on money on a full scale costume, I decided to make up the design in miniature.

Initially I was going to drape it on one of the half scale mannequins stocked in the university's pattern cutting room, but when I went to get one I discovered that every single tiny mannequin was already checked out by other students. Obviously, the next logical step was to make my own. The next couple days were filled with making a wire mesh framework and then sculpting a head and shoulders on top before crafting a stable base for it to stand on.

The mesh form may look innocent... but that stuff chewed up my hands like you would not believe. I don't know if there's some secret to working with it of which I am unaware, but by the end of the day my hands had been bleeding in at least five different places and my fingers looked like someone had taken a teeny-tiny cheese grater to them.

Then Super-Scupley moulded on top of the mesh base, baked, and painted with acrylics. It's been ages and ages since I last sculpted anything, and final result is not quite as I'd have desired, but the point of my making this was to be able to work with the costume and not to make a beautiful doll, so I sucked it up and went with it.

I really wanted the doll/mannequin to be stable on its own, so I didn't even bother with legs and feet and instead formed a base of more wire mesh which I then covered with muslin. Since just getting this far had already taken almost three days, I decided that arms were also not important at the moment, and moved on to the clothing.

Unfortuntely, I didn't take pictures of today's progress but as you can see from yesterday's bodice, she is no longer naked! More to follow...Gwendolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12515958095667834227noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6726079715627037503.post-46968085733498999102013-11-12T18:29:00.000-05:002013-11-12T18:29:15.847-05:00A lightbulb. It has gone off.I had a personal revelation of sorts today in regards to my creative process, and why and when I'm actually being creative instead of just copying history in appropriate ways and places.

Since starting the programme here, I feel like I've been flailing around a bit trying to figure out what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. (in regards to my actual work, not career path) It's sooo easy just to stay in the historically-accurate-clothing comfort zone, but I didn't come all this way just to do what I already know. Of course, leaving the comfort zone is much easier said than done, and for the last month or so I feel like I've been just spinning my wheels and not really getting anywhere.

Then today I began really thinking about projects and drawings I've done in the past where I feel like I was actually achieving a level of originality, and I realised that in all of those cases I was pretending the characters were all for a video game. This seems rather strange considering how much of a gamer I am not... in fact the only video game I've ever played all the way through was Fable. The first one. When it first came out years ago.

Here's a little compare and contrast...

This sketch is one I did a weeks or two ago of ideas for the main character's wedding scene. Pretty much straight up historical.

Then this evening I decided to approach the same character's costume in the same scene with the 'Video Game as influenced by History' approach, and ended up with this:
Without color (and in a not-very-well-lit phone pic) it's hard to properly tell what it is I see in my head, but I think this is definitely an approach I should try out. Whether it works well in the long run or not I have no idea, but for now it seems to be worth exploring.

The only adjustment I made was to the collar at the center back, as the collar was originally too large to fit into the neckline properly. The collar is too large in the diagram in the book as well, so it wasn't just me being sloppy with the scaling things up... as it was, I had to take a total of nearly four inches out of the collar for it to work properly.

The coat is quite small, too. As a matter of fact, it fits me pretty well which makes me wonder about the person who owned the orginal! Perhaps I'll have to make myself a tailcoat sometime in future...
As the name itself implies, The Girl Without Hands features a main character who looses her hands (through a foolish deal with the Devil that her father made). A little later on she receives silver hands to wear... eventually getting real, human hands again thanks to her goodness and the kindness of an angel. I'm thinking of turning the angel into a female scientist in my rendition of the tale, but that's really by the by. What really matters right now is that I'm planning on creating silver hands as part of the overall costuming.

I've spent some time looking at 19th century prosthetics, as well as metalwork from the 18th and 19th centuries plus some pieces of contemporary haute couture which thematically works.

At the moment I'm looking at a couple different techniques for making the hands, although it'll probably be a little while until I can get into the metals studio and try them out. I'm interesting in trying both electroplating and electrotyping to create metal hands based upon life-molds taken from the model (whoever that turns out to be).

Electroplating permanently bonds a coating of metal to whatever it is you've properly treated and immersed in the chemical bath, while electrotyping adheres to the agent itself and creates a copy from a mold. Since I want to create metal hands that are essentially wearable in glove-like fashion, whatever it is I make will have to be hollow. Electrotyping seems like it would be an ideal solution in this instance, although the technique was maining popular during the Victorian era. To create something like that through electroplating, I believe I would have to create a cast of the model's hand and arm out of wax, which I could then coat in metal using the electroplating after which I would melt the wax out.

I have no idea yet which techinque might be more appropriate or yield better results... if I want to do raised relief decoration on the silver hands (which I would like to do), it seems as if doing that on a wax cast would be the easiest way. But I think I won't know until I get in the studio and actually try it all out.
Their website contains a very small selection of their entire collection, which is comprised of over 4,000 items of clothing, 20,000 images, and an extensive library.

I think I need to go there. According the website they are open to the public every Thursday, but are very open to setting up private appointments on other days to look at things. Hopefully I'll be able to take a trip sometime in the next month.

The first two prints are from 1813 and are by Ludwig Emil Grimm... and yes, that is Grimm, as in Ludwig was the younger brother of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Very, very cool.
I love almost everything that these two are wearing... the strange little pantaloon type things (also worn by the men in the print below), the decorated back of the bodice, the almost gauntlet-like sleeve things, the overall silhouette... I have a feeling I'll be drawing heavily from this sort of style in my designing.
To start to gain that familiarity with the shape and inner structure of men's clothing, I'm putting together a muslin of the 1825 Dress Coat from the book Cut of Men's Clothes. I'm not sizing it in any way, just scaling up and making a mock-up in the original size. The idea is to be able to understand the garment so that when I get around to making the actual pieces for my project, I'll know how and where I want to deviate. The coat is actually really small; it might even be a decent size for me!

I scaled the pattern up by hand, which was super easy to do once my tutor told me a little trick... since the measure at the side of the page isn't a nice and neat 1/8 to an inch, draw a grid (or partial grid) over the pattern and then cut the scale off the side of the page to use as a sort of mini-ruler. Such a common sense solution. I couldn't believe I'd never thought of that before...
